Twelve Days of Christmas Unit - day 5

We are currently our the fifth day of our Twelve Days of Christmas study using this book by Helen Haidle. We learned that five golden rings represent the Torah - the first five books of the bible.

Kaleb worked on his coloring sheet while I read from our chapter books.

This ornament was somewhat hard to find a pattern to sew. Instead, she made golden rings from card stock, jewels, and snowflake stickers.

Kaleb is working on his rings.

Kaleb's finished items - five gold rings for the tree, his bag book page, and his coloring page. On each of the rings, I wrote the name of each of the books for the Torah.

J's finished items - the coloring page, the mini book for her lap book, and her five gold rings for the tree.

J also made a tree topper for our 12 days of Christmas tree. We discussed what would be a good topper and J decided that a heart with "My True Love" on it would be good.

"My True Love" represents God and He is at the top of our tree. Pretty cute.

Our 12 Days of Christmas tree - it is coming along nicely, I think. The kids are enjoying our Christmas unit. I am glad I didn't take the easy way out :) See you soon.

Little House on the Prairie - Week 5

We are currently working through The Prairie Primer and finishing our unit on Little House on the Prairie. J and I finished reading the book and worked on the last of our mini books, and such.

After reading each chapter, J wrote a short synopsis on her notebook page.

This week, we learned about Indians and J worked on a model of a teepee that I found at Hobby Lobby. She is gluing the base of the teepee.

J colored the outer teepee cover as the base dried.

The beginning of our teepee...

the finished product along with Santa:) It will be added to our little house village play set. Our second book in the series is finished. We are on to On the Banks of Plum Creek, which we will probably start in January. Have an awesome day.

Twelve Days of Christmas - Day 4

We are on day four of our Christmas unit on The 12 Days of Christmas. Our core book for this study is the one pictured by Helen Haidle. On the fourth day of Christmas, the four calling birds represent the gospels of the bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

J colored her sheet while I read.

Kaleb's ornament for four calling birds was a simple yarn wrapped bird that I found from I Heart Crafty Things (link below).

Each day, Kaleb uses his chart to follow along with our unit. This is one item that I haven't been able to get him to color but at least he is practicing his number writing.

J worked on her mini books for her lap book. She did some research on the four gospels - who wrote them, how many chapters in each, why they were written, etc... and wrote the information in her book.

Kaleb's finished coloring sheet, his bag book page, and his yarn wrapped ornament.

J;s finished items for the fourth day - her coloring sheet, mini books on the four gospels, and her ornament.

Four calling birds, not too bad. We are progressing nicely through this unit. Hope you are having a great day.

Twelve Days of Christmas - Day 3

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...three french hens. We are on our third day of our Christmas unit and we learned that the three french hens represented the three gifts of the wise men. Our unit study of the Twelve Days of Christmas is using this book by Helen Haidle.

Kaleb has surprised me during this unit. He is really taking his time with his coloring, trying to make it look nice. It helps that Grandma sent some new markers to J for her birthday and she is sharing.

Kaleb painted his french hen with water colors.

J is working on her coloring sheets. I use the time they are coloring to read from our many chapter books.

J made a wise men craft that I found from First Palette (link below). We will hang this in our window.

Kaleb's finished items for day 3 - small ornament pictures to represent the gifts of the wise men which will go in the pocket, his coloring sheet, the bag label, and his french hen ornament. When this study is completed, the ornaments will fit nicely into the bag book pockets as well.

J's finished items - her mini books for her lap book, the wise men gift ornaments from Church House Collection (link below), coloring sheet, and her french hen ornament from Down East Thunder Farm (link below).

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me....day three down, only nine more to go. The ornaments are turning out super cute. These will be treasured :) Have an awesome day.

Tot Tuesday

This year for Halloween, Riley was Captain America. He wasn't quite sure about dressing up and he surely wouldn't wear the mask but once the candy began to come, he pressed on. The day after Halloween, he was still carrying his shield, even while he was eating breakfast.

What a cute Captain! Wouldn't you say?

Twelve Days of Christmas - Day 2

Day 2 of our Christmas study based on the song - Twelve Days of Christmas with this book by Helen Haidle as the core book. On the second day, my true love gave to me turtle doves. The doves represent two things - (1) the doves that Mary and Joseph gave as an offering for Jesus in the temple and (2) the division of the bible into 2 parts - the old and new testament.

J is coloring her sheet for the day. They seem to love this. I am glad that I printed these out.

Kaleb is working on his bag book page. All I did was print the coloring sheets from 1 Plus 1 Plus 1 Equals 1 four to a page. This made them small enough for the bag book.

Day 2 represents the old and new testament so we decided we would watch a video to learn the books of the bible. We found one that we liked the best and watched it a few times. We found it at Spell Out Loud (link below).

For Kaleb's bag book, I printed a list of the books of the bible on card stock  and made a simple puzzle. This will be kept in his pocket.

Kaleb made a simple dove with silver glitter. On the back of his ornaments, I write what the day is and what is represents.

Theses are Kaleb's finished items for day 2 - his puzzle, the dove ornament, the bag book label, and coloring sheet.

J's finished items - her dove ornament, coloring page, and mini books for her lap book.

On the second day of Christmas....the kids are super excited every morning to see what I have planned for them in this unit. I am still putting things together but, over all, I think it is working out. Enjoy your day.

Twelve Days of Christmas Unit - day 1

Every year, we try to do a special Christmas unit. Last year we worked on the names of God. You can see the post here. This year, I had something easy planned but then (of course) changed my mind and decided to do The 12 Days of Christmas study. I know that it is a legend that there is meaning behind each day of Christmas but I thought it was fitting for our Christmas unit.

Our unit is based on this book by Helen Haidle. Each day, we read/sing the song and learn about the Christian meaning behind each day. They make an ornament and work on a lap book (J) and a bag book (Kaleb). The lap book came from Home School Share (link below) and the bag book is something that I am putting together as we go. I am pulling resources that are age appropriate for Kaleb from various websites (links below).

Our first day was to discuss the origins of the song, who My True Love is, and a partridge in a pear tree.

After reading and singing the song, they kids colored the coloring sheets for the day. I printed them two per page so they were too big to conquer. The pages will go in Kaleb's bag book and J's lap book.

Kaleb's ornament was a mini weather made from card stock with paper leaves and pears. I used the template for the ornament to make the partridge.

When I approached J about working on this unit, I asked her if she wanted to make paper ornaments like Kaleb or if she wanted to sew ornaments. She looked at me funny and said "Sew, of course." So, I had the daunting task of finding an ornament pattern to sew for each of the 12 days. Whew, it was a tough one, as if finding a craft for each one wasn't hard enough!

Kaleb's set of projects for day 1. The wreath will be placed on a mini tree in our homeschool room. The others will be placed in the pockets of the bag book - pictures to follow:)

J's finished projects for day 1. Her partridge is complete with a feather she found outside. Her finished projects will be for her lap book. First day went well. We started this unit early because I was worried that we wouldn't be able to finish it in time for Christmas holidays. I had scheduled two school days for each topic, especially since J was sewing her ornaments,  but we might not need both days. We will see. Hope your True Love sends something your way today:)
