Jesus is Tempted

We are working our way through Telling God's Story Book 1 this year and we are loving it. I love how the lessons are easy to do, with very little prep, but that I can also supplement when I want. Our lesson for the week was about the Temptation of Jesus.

We started this lesson by reading the passage from the bible and J coloring the sheet from the book.

J mapped the temptations of Jesus on a map of Israel. She drew symbols of each temptation and what Jesus responded to the tempter.

We discussed the Temple and color coded each section of the Temple.

One of the activities was to make a temple from sand. We had just purchased Kinetic sand from Michael's on a super sale (I have been waiting for this!). J created her temple from the Kinetic sand and, would you believe, that the temple stayed together until we knocked it down.

J created a mini bible book craft for this lesson from Aunties Bible Lesson (link below). This was super cute and it seemed timely since it is all most Valentine's Day. It was a good lesson. See you soon.

Lewis and Clark - Week 3

As an addition to our Sonlight Core D - American History part 1, we are also studying about Lewis and Clark. We are using a lap book from Hands of a Child. In addition to the lap book, we are reading several books about Lewis and Clark. Our recent book, The Captain's Dog by Roland Smith, has been a fun read. I would definitely recommend it.

We learned about Sacagawea this week. We read a few books about that amazing woman. She worked on a paper doll that I found from Education.com (link below).

We discussed all of the modes of transportation that Lewis and Clark used during their trip. She created a mini book including those modes.

We talked about the financial situation of the journey. It was thought that the trip would cost $2,500 but we discovered the true cost. It cost $38,722! That is quite a difference.

We also discussed what the Louisiana Purchase did for the U.S. It doubled our size and removed France from North America as a foreign power. It was interesting to learn about Thomas Jefferson and his vision for the United States. All of the mini books that she is working on will be placed into the lap book when we are finished. Hope you have an awesome weekend.

American Artists - Frank Lloyd Wright

Great American Artists for Kids is the backbone of our art education at home. It fits nicely with our American History studies as we learn about one artist a week. We plan on completing this study in two years when we complete our American History program. Our artist for the week was Frank Lloyd Wright. One interesting fact that I learned about Wright is that he designed the Guggenheim Art Museum. I had no idea.

We read a few books about Frank Lloyd Wright and looked at a few of his designs. J worked on an artist notebook page to add to her notebook.

She added Wright to our Artist wall. Look at all of the artists!! It makes me happy. Now, if you were to look at our composer wall, it is somewhat sad. But I am working on that.

I gave J a choice of projects to complete for Wright and she chose to do the candle holder based on Wright's stained glass windows. I bought the glass container from the Dollar Store and she used glue and tissue paper to cover it. This project was from Inner Child (link below).

I also found a coloring sheet based on one of his windows. She colored this to add to her notebook.

This is her finished lantern. The projects suggests that lines be drawn with sharpies. But J didn't want to do this - she liked it as it stands. I placed a battery operated candle in it. As luck would have it, we are close to one of Wright's designs. So, we also drove by and talked about the design. Pretty cool:) Have an awesome day.

State Study - Ohio

As part of our American History studies, we are also learning the states. We learn about one new state each week. This week, we learned about Ohio.

We always try to start our state study with a review of the states and capitals. I made this simple matching game using cards from the Dollar Store.

I found this map from the Target Dollar Spot. J colors each state in as she learns about it. If the state has a landmark, she will draw it and add it where it belongs.

J learned that Ohio is the only state with a motto from the Bible. "With God, all things are possible." Pretty neat:)

One special activity for the state was the box we received when I participated in a state exchange program. We received several items from the state. We learned more about Ohio with this hands-on package. It contained some craft items and fun things to read about and do. J loves to hear that I have a state box for her to investigate.

As part of her notebook pages, she drew and colored the state flower. She always tries to add a drawing of some item pertaining to the state to her pages. Not a shabby state study if I may say. Hope your week is going well, see you soon.

I found him under the table playing with some fabric. Maybe, he's a sewer at heart:)

Mary and Martha

We are still working through Telling God's Story Book 1. Our lesson for the week was about Mary and Martha.

J colored the sheet while I read the lesson from the bible.

We talked about our strengths and how we could use them to serve God. We also talked about how we can get over-extended by saying yes to every ministry opportunity and how we needed to have balance.

She made puppets and acted out the story for her brothers, much to the delight of the youngers! So, which one are you like.....Mary or Martha?

Character Training - Faith with free printable

J and I are working through the Virtue Training Bible this year in addition to our regular Bible program. The virtue for the week was Faith. While we learn about the virtue of faith, J is also creating a virtue notebook with some printables that I have created to go along with our learning.

J looked up the definition of faith in the dictionary. She wrote the definition under the faith heading in her notebook.

We discussed people in the bible who had faith - Noah, Moses, etc... J put together theming book of bible verses about faith.

She highlighted each verse in the bible and added the correct color tab. Our Bible is filling up of great scriptures for all of our virtues that we are learning about.

J's virtue notebook - faith page and faith verse ring. If you would like a copy of the notebook printable that we used to add to our virtue notebook, link is below. Enjoy. Hope you have an awesome weekend.

American Artists - Gutzon Borglum

This year, we are studying American History with Sonlight and as an added bonus, we are studying American artists. We are using Great American Artists for Kids book as the spine to our art study. This week's artist was Gutzon Borglum. He was the artist/visionary of Mount Rushmore.

We started the lesson by reading about Mount Rushmore and Gutzon Borglum from a library book. While we read, J colored a page to add to her artist notebook. This free coloring page came from Raising our Kids - link below.

We took an online tour of Mount Rushmore and enjoyed looking at the pictures of how it was made. It is truly hard to believe that no one was seriously injured or killed during the construction of the monument.

J worked on her artist page and notecard for our artist wall. She also drew a mini version of Mount Rushmore and added it to our United States map.

The project for our artist was to create a clay carving of Mount Rushmore and the presidents. I just had J create two of the presidents. She chose Washington and Jefferson.

She added Gutzon to her timeline, which is quickly filling up.

Her finished Mount Rushmore product. J used a toothpick to do the carving. Can't you see the likenesses? I love them! I love our American Art studies! See you soon.

Tot Tuesday

Guess what my baby can do....?

His favorite new spot to sit.....right in the middle of my table....while we are working on school. We have had to remove all chairs that are unused and hide them in the bedrooms to prevent his constant climbing onto the table. But that doesn't mean he doesn't find something else to climb on! I've never had a climber before....oh, boy!

Philip and Nathaniel

We are continuing our progress through Telling God's Story Book 1 and this week's lesson was about the calling of Philip and Nathaniel.

We started the lesson by reading the story from the Bible and coloring the sheet included in the lesson.

One of her projects was to created a crown.

Her finished crown - pinkish/red.

We worked on our family tree - seeing where and who we came from.

And she made a telescope to see Nathaniel under the tree. Cute. I pretty much stuck to the simple lesson plan since my computer was still on the fritz. But it was well rounded and J enjoyed it - that's all that matters, right? :)

Cooking with Kaleb

In case you hadn't noticed, Kaleb has been missing somewhat from the blog due to his involvement with VPK - Voluntary Pre Kindergarten. It takes up most of his day and I no longer work with him as I used to. That doesn't mean he won't reappear next school when I bring him back home.

I was recently struggling with the fact that I am not able to work with him like I used to. Frankly, I missed him. But I found a new way to connect with Kaleb....cooking dinner.

It is a simple fix and he loves doing it! It didn't occur to me to ask him to help with dinner. It happened by accident - I needed him to leave the situation on day (he was irritating his siblings a bit too much). Ever since that day, I can expect him to come and help me with dinner. I enjoy the time with just him. We talk about what we are making, how his day went, anything really. We just talk. I love it and I love that we are making memories.

American Artists - John Singer Sargent

We are still working through our art book - Great American Artists for Kids while we learn American History for the next two school years. Our artist this week was John Singer Sargent. This artist was somewhat difficult to find activities and children's books for, so we stuck with the suggested art activity from the book.

We read what we could about Sargent and created a notebook page for her art notebook. I have an art app on my iPad and it had some extra information on the artist.

She added Sargent to her timeline.

We looked at Sargent's works on my iPad and J chose a work that she wanted to replicate. She drew it in pencil and then painted in watercolor.

J added the side pony tail for interest. I love the eyelashes and the lips!

Her completed art project for John Singer Sargent. Pretty cute. Hope you are having an awesome week. See you soon.
