Lewis and Clark Unit - Week 2

In addition to our normal studies with Sonlight Core D - American History year 1, we are working through a unit/lap book on Lewis and Clark. We are using Hands of a Child Lewis and Clark lap book and several chapter books. Here are a few things that we worked on this week.

While discussing the Louisiana Purchase, J marked the map with the land mass that came with the purchase. The purchase doubled the size of America.

J worked on some coloring sheets of Lewis and Clark that she will use in her lap book.

We read about Thomas Jefferson and created a mini book about him. The book includes all of his political offices and several of his inventions.

We read that there was only one casualty during the entire expedition - a man named Floyd who they think died of an appendicitis. Well, it was a perfect time to look up what an appendix was - she is a little on the disgusted side!

Another interesting item that we read about was about a bear that attacked the travelers, was shot multiple times, and still came at them! The bear was over 8 feet tall! I wanted J to get a feel of how long 8 feet was so we got a tape measure out and marveled over the distance. Wow! Can you imagine a bear of that size running you down? Not too bad for week 2 of Lewis and Clark. Having fun learning with J! Have a good one.
